Mohs surgery is a highly specialized and effective technique for removing skin cancer while conserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Recognized for its precision and high success rate, Mohs surgery is often the treatment of choice for certain types of skin cancers, especially those in sensitive areas or recurrent cases.

What Is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery involves the systematic removal and microscopic examination of skin layers affected by cancer. The surgeon removes a thin layer of skin from the affected area and examines it immediately under a microscope in our laboratory. If cancer cells remain, an additional layer is carefully removed and examined. This process continues until no cancer cells are detected, ensuring complete removal of the cancerous tissue in as few stages as possible.

This meticulous approach allows for the highest success rates, typically exceeding 97% for certain skin cancers and minimizes the removal of healthy skin, preserving the maximum amount of healthy tissue for functional and cosmetic reasons.

When Is Mohs Surgery Recommended?

Mohs surgery is especially useful for:

• Skin cancers on the face, ears, lips and other areas where tissue preservation is critical 
• Cancers with poorly defined borders or those that have recurred after previous treatment 
• Tumors that are large or have infiltrated deeply into surrounding tissue 
• Cancers in areas with limited skin elasticity, such as the eyelids, nose, ears, or fingers
